Palma's tapas culture is a relaxed affair, deeply tied to the island's Mediterranean lifestyle. Unlike the more frenetic pace of some mainland cities, here the focus is on enjoying good company and fresh ingredients, often with a view of the sea or the historic city. Our monthly ranking reflects this spirit, highlighting the venues that consistently offer excellent tapas, as voted by registered accounts. The list resets on the first of each month, ensuring a current and relevant guide to Palma's evolving tapas offerings.
What tapas is Palma known for?
While you'll find many Spanish classics, Palma has its own specialities. Look out for ensaïmada de sobrassada, a savoury version of the island's famous pastry, often served warm. Another local favourite is tumbet, a layered vegetable dish similar to ratatouille, sometimes served as a tapa. You'll also find excellent fritura de pescado (fried fish), particularly small, fresh catches from the local waters. Don't miss camaiots (pickled quail eggs), a simple but satisfying bite, and pan amb oli, bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with olive oil, a Mallorcan staple that forms the base for many toppings.
Where can I try the best tapas in Palma?
The historic centre of Palma, particularly around the La Seu cathedral and the narrow streets leading off it, is a prime area for tapas. Wander through the Old Town (Casco Antiguo), exploring lanes like Carrer dels Apuntadors and Carrer de Sant Joan. The Santa Catalina neighbourhood, once a fishing quarter, is now a popular spot with a more modern feel, offering a good range of tapas bars. For a more local experience, venture slightly out towards areas like Es Jonquet.
What is the local tapas custom in Palma?
In Palma, it's common for a small tapa to be included with a drink, especially in more traditional establishments, though this is becoming less universal. It's not as strictly the rule as it once was, so don't be surprised if you need to order your tapas separately. The main mealtime for tapas is typically late morning, from around 11 am to 1 pm, and then again in the early evening, from about 6 pm to 8 pm, before the main dinner service begins. It's a social activity, often involving moving from one bar to another (tapeo) with friends.
How is the monthly ranking calculated?
Our ranking is based on valid votes cast during the current calendar month, one per account and tapa. This ensures that the ranking reflects recent experiences and the freshest trends. On the first day of each new month, the ranking resets to zero, providing a dynamic and up-to-date guide to Palma's best tapas.
